Dear people of Syria

You hang up your soul
like it is a coat
You are swimming in an ocean
of fear, regret and guilt
You feel that you shouldn’t have left
and now you can’t go home

Home doesn’t want you
but you don’t want home either
You needed to leave
It is not safe, and now you can’t go back

The insults that are constantly cast your way
the glares, the frowns
you swallow them like they are a glass
and they leave a bitter taste in your mouth
But anything is better than being woken by children
screaming in terror
and the constant sound of gunfire

Your heritage will not be lost
Your memories are yours forever
The stereotypes will not change who you are
But you wish it could be different
In the end you did not leave behind everything
In the things you do
there are touches of home
and you can tell they mean a lot

People will admire your positivity
mirror it too
You have lost everything
but that will not wipe the smile off your face
Sleepless nights and days filled with tragedy and loss
they will be not be for nothing

There is still hope for you
There is life for everyone after war
No one is born to die
You will not give up now
not this close to the end

You have a new life
maybe even a new home
Wherever the journey takes you
never forget your roots
They are strong
During those times they are what held you together

The beauty of your home country
which was saturated with memories of love
but you will never forget
your true home
Syria
